The coverage also explored the impact of the disaster on Southampton, including the loss of life and the lasting legacy of memorials and the Sea City museum.
Of the 1,500 plus people who perished on April 15 1912 in the icy waters of the Atlantic, 549 – more than a third and nearly all of them crew – came from Southampton. The disaster left homes near the docks without husbands and sons, aunts and uncles, brothers and sisters. It was said that everyone living in the city at the time knew, or was related to, someone who died.
